Tavatavanawai to make Super Rugby debut

Fiji-born Tasman Mako winger Timoci Tavatavanawai will make his long waited debut for Moana Pasifika against the Blues in round 7 of Super Rugby Pacific tomorrow.

Tavatavanawai put pen to paper for the Moana Pasifika in October last year after he burst into the New Zealand rugby scene with his disciplined performance for Tasman in their NPC campaign.

The former Fiji U20 representative, who stands at 1.87m and weighs 111kg, is a strong and powerful wing who has wreaked havoc against opposition defences with his fleet-footedness in his seven appearances for the Mako last year.

The 23-year-old scored four tries and has drawn comparisons by some to Flying Fijians star Josua Tuisova.

Crusaders boss Scott Robertson saw Tavatavanawai’s talents at Super Rugby level and plucked him out of club rugby in Marlborough to take part in pre-season training earlier this year.

Despite having never played first-class rugby in New Zealand, he proved his worth by scoring two second half tries off the bench to help instigate a comeback victory for the Crusaders in their Farmlands Cup clash against the Highlanders in Temuka in March last year.

Sekope Kepu returns to Captain the side and is joined in the front row by Ezekiel Lindenmuth and Samiuela Moli at hooker.

Moana plays Blues at 7.05pm at Eden Park.

Pasifika: Ezekiel Lindenmuth, Samiuela Moli, Sekope Kepu (c), Veikoso Poloniati, Michael Curry, Sione Tu’ipulotu, Solomone Funaki, Henry Time-Stowers, Ereatara Enari, Christian Leali'ifano, Anzelo Tuitavuki, Solomone Kata, Fine Inisi, Timoci Tavatavanawai, William Havili

Reserves: Luteru Tolai, Abraham Pole, Chris Apoua, Alex McRobbie, Alamanda Motuga, Dwayne Polataivao, Lincoln McClutchie, Tomasi Alosio
