Maqala to stay with Bayonne until 2024

Olympic Games gold medalist Sireli Maqala has extended his contract with French Pro D2 club Aviron Bayonnais (Bayonne) for two more seasons.

Maqala who had originally planned to remain in Europe for one season has delighted fans with his decision to further his tenure with the club.

“I am very happy to stay one more season here,” Maqala told abrugby.fr.

“I had planned to get to Top 14 with Bayonne in two years maximum.

“Now, I have signed myself up until 2024 and hope that we will go back to the Top 14 in the next few weeks.”

The Delaiyadua Village in Ra lad said he had was not interested in changing clubs at the moment and still keen on adjusting to his new home in Bayonne.

“It's a real personal goal to evolve in the Top 14 and by staying here, I know that I will progress because I will still learn a lot.

“I have been here for 6 months now and I really like this club, this city, the atmosphere at the stadium as well of course.

Bayonne club president Philippe Tayeb added Maqala had been an asset for the club.

"After the late arrival of Sireli at the start of autumn, we are satisfied every day to have such a player in the Aviron squad,” Tayeb said

“Sireli is a boy of great quality, great professionalism and great kindness. “We are therefore very happy to know that he will remain with us until at least the summer of 2024.

“We also thank the Fiji Rugby Union for facilitating this extension.”
