Aim is to give players game time: Gollings

Fiji 7s Coach Ben Gollings says their primary aim at the Oceania 7s in Auckland is to give players ample game time.

The Olympic gold medalists came away with a 19-29 loss to Australia Selection 7s in their opener, but later bounced back to 24-10 win against Tonga in their second game yesterday.

“There is a big heavy schedule for all of us, and it is about managing players, and we have got to give everyone abit of experience," he told Stan Sport.

On the Fiji 7s calendar this year is the Commonwealth Games in England next month, followed by the final stop of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Los Angeles 7s tournament in August with the Rugby World Cup Sevens in South Africa in September.

Gollings added the big test for them would be against New Zealand on day two of the Oceania 7s.

“That will be the biggest challenge for us, and playing New Zealand on homesoil, it will be about building on our performances.”

The Fiji 7s team plays their second round of games today against New Zealand at 11.24am and their second game against Australia Selection at 5.24pm.
