I wanted ABs jumper from 2017: Sowakula

Newly selected All Blacks forward Pita Gus Sowakula says he set his focus on donning the New Zealand jumper as soon as he arrived in the country six years ago.

Since playing basketball for Fiji in 2015 the Tagaqe Village warrior is only days away from making his international debut for one of the world’s most elite rugby teams.

“I came here six years ago, as soon as I arrived here; I’ve put it in my mind that I want to make the All Blacks one day,” Sowakula told TVNZ’s One News.

Sowakula helped Fiji basketball to a silver medal finish at the 2015 Pacific Games, before  pursuing rugby while playing professional basketball in New Zealand.

He earned himself a full-time spot with the Gallagher Chiefs in 2018 and since then has been a regular face on the match day 23.

Sowakula’s performances in the 2022 Super Rugby Pacific season has seen selectors impressed by the powerful number eight, with his work rate and explosive ball carrying.
