We need to play smart rugby: Cotter

Vodafone Flying Fijians Coach Vern Cotter says they will need to play smart rugby to overcome Tonga in their Pacific Nations Cup opener tomorrow in Suva.

The man in charge of the five-time champions has a task to harness the weapons in his arsenal not be swayed by the traditional rivalry of the Pacific.

“Traditionally like all other games against Tonga, this match will also be very physical for the initial 20 to 30 minutes,” Cotter said.

“We need to be ready for that confrontation, the aggressive nature of their rugby plus we need to be smart and create opportunities, be accurate, calm and composed.”

Meanwhile, Cotter is banking on the expertise on his game-day bench consisting of Sam Matavesi, Eroni Mawi, Luke Tagi, Apisalome Ratuniyarawa, Kitione Kamikamica, Peni Matawalu, Setareki Tamanivalu and Manasa Mataele to make an impact.

“These players will bring experience when bodies are a little bit tired and will be able to do extra work ons at the final stage of the game.”

Cotter added playing at home would be an added advantage for them.

“We play at home and we want to play as a team and for each other and put in a good performance.”
