Milne double in Rabbitohs win

Vodafone Fiji Bati centre Taane Milne scored a brace of tries as the South Sydney Rabbitohs outmuscled the Cronulla Sharks 38-12 in the Preliminary Round and booked a spot in the Preliminary finals yesterday.

Just two minutes into the match the Rabbitohs were on the scoreboard taking advantage of unsettled Sharks through Mark Nicholls's try which Latrell Mitchell converted for a 6-nil lead.

Rabbitohs spent much of the opening 20 minutes defending their line, as Cronulla dominated possession but failed to find a way through.

It took another 27 minutes for the Rabbitohs to get a try from Milne, who scored out wide after some crisp quick hands inside created space, before Cameron Murray powered through a tackle from Dale Finucane to score under the posts, with Mitchell converting all three of his side's tries for an 18-0 lead at the break.

Cronulla came out strong and scored immediately in the second stanza with winger Ronaldo Mulitalo setting up for Briton Nikora to score while Nicholas Hynes converted but the Rabbitohs responded quickly through Lachlan Ilias quickly and Mitchell converted to increase the lead.

A long-range try from Mulitalo gave Cronulla hope once again, but after Cody Walker scored and Mitchell again converted, South Sydney sat on a 30-12 lead and a second four-pointer by Milne and a late Mitchell penalty sealed the win.

Rabbitohs will face defending NRL champs Penrith Panthers in the qualifying final next week.
