Southern champs cruise into semis

Southern champs Suva Grammar School have sealed their spot in the U18 semifinals of the 2022 Vodafone Super Deans Championship after outclassing Lelean 21-8 in the third quarterfinal at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva today.

Early error by Lelean rewarded a penalty to Suva Grammar and Sairusi Masi took it for a 3-0 lead before birthday boy Gabriel Simpson picked up a downfield ball and raced for their first try but the conversion failed.

Lelean were later reduced to 14 players when Iliesa Savou copped a yellow card for dangerous play which again awarded a penalty to Suva Grammar and Masi booted the ball in between the uprights for an 11-0 lead.

A series of errors by Suva Grammar gave away a penalty to Lelean and fullback Isikeli Veitala got the side on the scoreboard before they missed a golden chance to score their first try through Alfred Bugakoto but he knocked the ball on the try-line.

Suva Grammar lost Matayasi Tuisireli to the sin-bin for a high tackle yet Lelean failed to take advantage of the situation.

Coming off the bench, Immanuel Temo snatched the ball away from the five metre scrum and dotted down while Masi converted and minutes later he also booted a penalty to increase Suva Grammar’s lead to 21-3.

With nine minutes remaining, Lelean got back in action and scored a try through Solomone Vereti.

Suva Grammar will play Natabua High School in the second semifinal at Prince Charles Park in Nadi next Saturday.
