MBHS upsets RKS in Deans thriller

Marist Brothers High School has advanced to the semifinals in the U18 grade of the 2022 Vodafone Super Deans Championship after registering a 16-13 upset victory over favourites and Eastern champions Ratu Kadavulevu School at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva today.

Winger Ratu Peni Veidreyaki got the boys from Lodoni on the score-sheet in the 6th minute after bursting away from a Marist scrum.

A set piece play from Marika Bogimasi set up Mikaele Senibua to score in the 14th minute and a successful conversion gave Marist a 7-5 lead.

After a foul play by RKS, Marist was awarded a penalty which Brendon Sown took but it landed directly in the hands of the opponents.

Minutes later, some dangerous play by RKS again awarded Marist a penalty and this time Sown was successful with his attempt but their joy was cut short when RKS attacked and scored through Jonathan Rokobaca to tie up the scores at 10-10.

The slippery conditions saw Marist make errors and give away a penalty to RKS which gave them a 13-10 lead heading into the break.

Marist came out strong in the second stanza and enjoyed a lot of possession.

A  ball held late by RKS gave away a penalty to Marist which Joseva Matawalu took and leveled the scores in the 45th minute.

A knock-on by Epeli Nacaqenisau gave Marist a penalty and again Matawalu rose to the occassion and slotted the winner.

Marist will meet Ba Provincial in the first semifinal next Saturday in Nadi.
