Vunivalu cops 1-match suspension

Fiji-born Queensland Reds winger Suliasi Vunivalu will miss Saturday’s match with the Western Force after he was suspended following their defeat to the Fijian Drua.

Vunivalu was twice yellow carded for trips during the 28-19 defeat in Suva, with the loss ending their hopes of a home quarter-final.

The Wallaby was yellow-carded in the fourth minute after stopping Kitione Salawa from scoring a certain try illegally.

He then produced a similar action on Selestino Ravutaumada in the 45th minute, which slowed the winger down before Tevita Ikanivere eventually crossed for his double.

The Foul Play Review Committee upheld the red card for the pair of yellow cards and issued the one-match suspension.

“Having conducted a detailed review of all the available evidence, including all camera angles and additional evidence, including submissions by the player, the Foul Play Review Committee upheld the Red Card and found the Player to have contravened Law 9.12,” FPRC Chairman Stephen Hardy ruled.

“The FPRC assessed the Player’s actions as including two separate foul play actions of tripping. The FPRC have found these actions as amounting to persistent offending under law 9.12, which warrants an entry point suspension of 2 weeks.

“The Player was given a 50% discount for entering an early guilty plea (and other relevant mitigating factors including remorse and prior disciplinary record), reducing the suspension from 2 weeks to 1 week.  The Player is therefore suspended up to and including 25 May 2024.”

The Reds will finish their season against the NSW Waratahs in Sydney following Saturday’s match with the Force.
