Workforce needs authentic leaders: Singh

Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, Agni Deo Singh has pointed out the need for authentic leaders in Fiji’s workforce.

While speaking on the critical theme of ‘Future Proof Your Workforce’ at the 2024 Fiji Human Resources Institute Convention (FHRI), Singh highlighted that the world of work is evolving at an unprecedented pace that is driven by technological advancements and the need for sustainability is important.

He emphasized to HR professionals to ensure that Fiji’s Workforce is well prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the future.

“Fiji’s workforce must be equipped with the skills and knowledge by cultivating a culture of adaptability, creativity and lifelong learning as well as empowering our people to embrace change rather than fearing it, said Singh.

“To embrace change and adaptation, leaders must foster change that encourages innovation, experimentation and learning to empower our workers.”
“Your role as Human Resources professionals has a huge responsibility handed to you as you hold the balance in the workforce.”

He further mentioned that their role is to ensure that skill gaps are filled by upskilling and reskilling the workers to keep up with digitalization and remain relevant in today’s workforce economic shift.

“Laying strong emphasis on gender equality, cultural diversity and employee work-life balance, the participants at the convention were urged to promote policies and incentives that address inclusivity and equality.”

“To be authentic, leaders must be trustworthy, forward-thinking, inclusive and adaptable,” said Singh.

Singh also reminded the HR professionals that a leader is respected through the power of the chair or caring behavior, however, the difference is that the power of the chair is temporary while caring behavior is permanent.
