Young embraces transition, eager to shine in 7s

After a six-month injury rehab, Heleina Young is set for her return in next weekend’s Vancouver 7s with the Fiji Airways Fijiana side.

She had anticipated her comeback around this time, so the squad announcement came as no surprise to her.

The transition, while challenging, has been a learning curve for Young, who is focused on absorbing as much as she can from both her teammates and coaches.

“The transition from 15s to 7s is quite a big change for me. This is my first time playing for 7s rugby. I am pretty excited, nervous as well, but I’ll take it as it comes,” she said.

“Blending in with the squad hasn’t been a problem, we have a very good set of girls, they have been patient with me in my learning process and it’s been the best part of being in this team,” she admitted, as she adapts and grows in the faster-paced sevens format.

Young says she is satisfied with her decision to switch formats, finding solace and support within her new team.

“I am quite happy to be back with my family and just being a part of this team has been good for my healing and my mind, my physical wellbeing.”

Her family, especially her late mother, serves as her primary motivation, driving her to excel and enjoy the game without undue pressure.
