Labasa Women progress to OCL semifinals

Labasa has etched their name in the history books by securing their first-ever semifinal berth in the OFC Women’s Champions League.

With defending champions AS Academy Féminine bowing out in the group stages, the tournament is set to crown a new champion this year.

In a match filled with missed opportunities, Labasa’s Anasimeci Volitokoro stood out with a significant counter-attack effort before halftime.

However, her attempt was thwarted by a sharp save from Tongan goalkeeper Anais Barth, leaving teammate Stella Naivalulevu unable to capitalize.

The second half saw AS Academy stepping up in an attempt to dominate, with Joceline Kourevi making an early impact.

Minutes later, Labasa thought they had won a penalty after Volitikoro went to ground in the box chasing a delightful through ball from Natieta Leba but the referee waved away the appeals.

Volitikoro’s late-game solo run threatened to break the deadlock, however, the Fijian forward couldn’t keep control for backup to arrive, and her shot ended up hitting the side netting.

Digicel Labasa Women now look ahead to a challenging first semifinal against Hekari United from PNG at 12pm on Wednesday.
