Derenalagi to captain Fijian Drua

The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua has officially named Meli Derenalagi as captain for the 2024 Super Rugby Pacific season.

The backrower and Olympic gold medalist brings experience and leadership to the role, having led the team previously.

Head Coach Mick Byrne commended Derenalagi’s previous captaincy, saying, “Meli is no stranger to the role having been the captain last season and we look forward to seeing him take on the challenge once again.”

Byrne also expressed confidence in Derenalagi’s evolving leadership, backed by experienced players like Mesake Doge, Tevita Ikanivere, and Iosefo Masi.

Derenalagi was part of the 2020 Olympic Gold Medal winning Fiji 7s team and has made 5 appearances for the Flying Fijians.

Since joining the Drua in 2022, the 25-year-old Derenalagi has played in 19 matches. His contributions on the field include scoring two tries in the Super Rugby Pacific.

His outstanding performance was recognised when he earned the 2023 Drua Try of the Year for a memorable play against the Hurricanes.

As the Fijian Drua looks ahead to the new season, the team and fans alike have high expectations from Derenalagi’s influence and the positive impact it will have on their games.
