As we celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations between Fiji and Indonesia, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad reaffirmed the Coalition Government’s commitment to enhancing trade, economic, and strategic cooperation.
Prof Prasad, held discussions with the Indonesian Finance Minister, Sri Mulyani, on the sidelines of the 57th ADB Annual Meeting.
He extended gratitude to Minister Mulyani for her global leadership and support to Fiji and other Pacific Island countries within multilateral financial institutions, including the ADB.
Prof Prasad also conveyed appreciation for Indonesia’s leadership in the constituency of which Fiji is part of, and advocating for small Pacific island countries like Fiji, Samoa, Cook Islands, Tonga, and Niue.
Sri Mulyani echoed similar sentiments, emphasising the importance of strengthening partnership between the two nations.
Later, DPM Prasad engaged with senior executives of the Japan Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC), which, along with Chugoku Electric, holds 44% shares in EFL. Discussions centered on energy transition and exploring potential new investment avenues.
He also met with Leah Gutierrez, Director-General of the ADB Pacific Department, to discuss Fiji’s new National Development Plan, updates on the Fiji economy, and the forthcoming Fiji-ADB Country Partnership Strategy 2024-2028.
The discussions also delved into key investment priorities, including critical bridge replacements, water and wastewater management, drainage, rural development, CWM upgrade/relocation, and the nearly finalized US$70 million policy-based budget.
He also convened with the Constituency Office, expressing gratitude for their support and deliberating on the office’s priorities for the upcoming year.
Over the weekend, DPM Prasad will participate in the ADB Governors Business Session, Governors plenary sessions, and engage in high-level bilateral meetings with the United States, New Zealand, and OPEC.
