PM Ardern announces resignation

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced her resignation, which is effective from 7 February.

In a press conference today, Ardern said that there was no secret scandal behind her resignation.

“I am human. We give as much as we can for as long as we can, and then it’s time. And for me, it’s time.”

She was quitting the top job after being in office for five and half years.

The NZ Prime Minister was last in Fiji last year, attending the 51st Pacific Islands Forum Leader’s meeting, where she held discussions with the former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama of which they shared a passion for Pacific regionalism, climate change, family, amongst many others.

The former Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama, said her country and the Pacific will miss her leadership style.

The two leaders were seen to have been close since and developed a friendship after the 50th Pacific Islands Forum Meeting in Funafuti, Tuvalu, in 2019.
