Next 4 years will be vital: Singh

Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh says the next four years will be the most vital for the industry as this will be the time that stakeholders will collaborate to restore and revitalise the sector.

Speaking during the Sugar Industry Stakeholders meeting, Singh said their focus should remain on increasing cane production.

“Production has to increase to 1.8m tonnes in 2023, 2 million tonnes in 2024 and 2.2 million tonnes from the year 2025 and beyond.”

“We’ll focus on increasing mechanisation to support cane production, including cane planting, fertilizer and weedicide application, to harvesting.”

Singh also said that issue of transportation cost is common and this will also be looked into for improvement.

He further called on all relevant stakeholders, businesses and the board chairs and heads of the various sugar institutions in the country to work together for the purpose and mandate of the establishments.
