Niusawa’s Volavola goes one better

Niusawa Methodist High School’s Leone Volavola achieved his aim of winning a gold medal medal at the 2023 Coca-Cola Games in Suva today after winning the Junior Boys Javelin event.

The strapping lad from Nakasaleka Village in Kadavu claimed first place after throwing a distance of 48.23 metres.

Volavola said it was a grand moment for him after a silver medal finish in the same event last year.

“I finished with a silver medal last year, and I am thankful that I went one better this year,” Volavola said.

“It wasn’t easy it took a lot of sacrifice, camping in school and the morning trainings.

“The boat ride was worth it that I could now go back to Taveuni with a medal.”

Volavola dedicated the win to his team mates, saying the win was for all of them.

“There are only seven of us from our school, and this win is for all of them.”
