Viti Levu schools to remain closed

All schools in Viti Levu will remain closed on Friday 22 March 2024.

Permanent Secretary for Education, Selina Kuruleca announced the decision after close consultation with the National Disaster Management Office.

.”We are concerned for the safety and accessibility of students who are traveling from outside these areas. Some students come from outside the towns, crossing streams and roads.”

“They have continued to experience heavy rain, which may compromise their safety. As such, we will continue to keep our Viti Levu schools closed.”

All schools outside Viti Levu will be open tomorrow.

Additionally, boarding schools with boarders onsite may continue with their instructional programs.

Parental discretion must be exercised at all times, and Heads of Schools must continue to liaise with their School Management Committees, District, and Divisional Officers for further updates.

A circular detailing Contingency Plans to recover lost Learning and Teaching time will be disseminated to schools in the next few days.

“We recognize that schools may prefer to use different modalities to recover the lost learning and teaching time, so we will provide a few options to them. We will not cut into the school term holidays,” said Kuruleca.

Tertiary Institutions are advised to use their discretion regarding their class offerings.
