SOE suspended, pending investigation: AG

The Attorney-General has confirmed that the Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem, has been suspended.

In a statement, Attorney-General Siromi Turaga said this was based on the advice of the Constitutional Offices Commission, which was endorsed by the His Excellency the President, this afternoon.

Turaga said that this is in accordance with Section 137(4) of the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji.

“The Constitutional Offices Commission received a complaint of misbehaviour that warranted his removal from his office,” Turaga said.

The Attorney General also confirmed that the Constitutional Offices Commission resolved in its meeting on Wednesday, that the complaint needs to be investigated by a tribunal, pursuant to Section 137(3)(a)(i) of the Constitution.

Turaga said Saneem has been suspended pending the appointment of a tribunal and subsequent investigation into the complaint made.

“The Supervisor of Election, Mohammed Saneem, was provided an opportunity to address the complaint prior to the COC’s deliberation yesterday.”

“In the meantime, the Directors of the Fijian Elections Office will manage the administrative affairs of the Office of the Supervisor of Elections,” Turaga added.

Saneem is suspended, with full pay.
