No one expected us to come this far – Kumar

Following Labasa’s scoreless draw with AS Academy Féminine, the Lionesses have defied all odds by making it to the Semifinals for the first time in Women’s OFC league.

Last year’s performance set low expectations for the team, but this year their preparation and unity have led them to surpass all predictions.

Vanisha Kumar who was named ‘Player of the Match’ in the game said that making it to the Semi’s was a huge deal for the team,

“No one expected us to come this far. Proving everyone wrong has been amazing,”

“We came in as the underdogs. We did not do very well last year. I think the expectations were quite low for us,”

“The team was quite happy with how we progressed in this competition. I don’t think we expect to do as well as we did, but we are all pretty happy about it,”

Kumar attributed their success to better preparation and teamwork and said that many players were already in shape from national team training.

“We also have a new coach and he has gelled well with the team in the short time we had. I think that all played a part in how we did,” she added.
