Byrne demands ban over racial abuse; Rebels probe incident

Swire Shipping Fijian Drua’s Head Coach Mick Byrne, is calling for a lifetime ban on a fan who racially abused Frank Lomani during the Drua vs Rebels match last Friday night in Melbourne.

He says the Melbourne Rebels are investigating the matter.

The incident occurred when Lomani received a red card for hitting Rebels’ second-rower Josh Canham on the back of the head with his elbow during a ruck.

After the incident Lomani appeared noticeably upset.

“You lose your right to come and watch the football live. It’s ridiculous. These Fijian players provide some of the best spectacles of the game … and yet they’re exposed to this low behavior,” Bryne told the Sydney morning herald

He wants the fan to be removed from the club, saying it’s “unacceptable behaviour” and “in 2024, you have to be aware that it’s unacceptable.”

“We were happy with the Rebels reaching out on Saturday morning saying they are investigating it,” he added.
