Fiji’s work landscape stands out for its unique blend of cultural diversity, traditional values, and a strong sense of community that shapes our work dynamics and relationships, says Employment Minister, Agni Deo Singh.
Speaking at the Employment Relations Forum, Singh said as the world of work undergoes rapid transformations, presenting a mix of challenges and prospects, Fiji stands out but it is imperative for us to reflect on the trends, advancements, and disruptions that are reshaping the future of work not only in Fiji but also globally.
“Navigating the ‘twists and turns’ of the Fijian work landscape requires us to consider a range of factors, including economic conditions, labour market trends, and regulatory frameworks that influence employment relations.”
Singh highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to policy development and review is evident in its efforts to align the Employment Relations Act 2007 with International Labour Standards and minimum wage rate review for both formal and informal sectors.
Additionally, the Employment Ministry, in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO), is committed to reviewing the National Employment Policy to address the country’s evolving labour market needs.
“The forthcoming launch of Fiji’s first National Occupational Health and Safety Policy and Profile underscores the Ministry’s dedication to enhancing workplace standards and practices; as well as the ratification of ILO Convention 187 on ILO Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention.
“In supporting sustainable growth and labour mobility programs, the Ministry is working towards developing the National Labour Mobility Policy Framework and Strategy.
Furthermore, initiatives such as the review of the National Productivity Master Plan and the automation of inspection systems reflect the Ministry’s commitment to promoting workplace productivity and efficiency.
Singh thanked the stakeholders for their active participation, sharing perspectives and insights in charting a course towards a more inclusive and productive work environment.
The dialogue and discussions held at the forum will assist the Ministry to pave the way in shaping a brighter future for employment relations in Fiji.
