President applauds Fiji Hockey for WCup qualification

His Excellency, the President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has commended the Fiji Hockey Men’s and Women’s teams for making Fiji proud by qualifying for next year’s World Cup which will be played in Oman in January.

While receiving the teams yesterday at the State House, Ratu Wiliame told them: “It is not about winning, but about your participation as it is something you are passionate about, something you have chosen to do, and that is to represent Fiji.”

He said Hockey does not get enough recognition, but the achievement of the teams has stamped a mark in history and qualified for the 2024 FIH Hockey World Cup, a blessing for the sport.

“When you leave here, you will go with a sense of freedom knowing that you have returned to the place where you presented your iTatau, creating history and a challenge to the sports bodies who come to present their iTatau.”

The President also thanked the management of Fiji Hockey for their leadership and for showing the young athletes how things should be done.

The teams recently participated in FIH Hockey 5s Oceania Cup which was held in Australia.
