Fiji loses to Argentina, faces NZ in quarters

Fiji finished second in Pool A of Vancouver 7s after losing its final match 24-19 to Argentina at the B.C Place this morning.

The result sees Fiji book a quarterfinal spot against arch rivals New Zealand, while Argentina will face Samoa.

Luciano Gonzalez scored two quick tries to put the Pumas into the lead before Fiji replied with a Josese Batirerega try.

The Fijians lost lanky Joseva Talacolo for two minutes after he illegally took a player in the air following the restart.

Argentina led 10-7 at the break and with an extra man on the field, they scored another try through Marcus Moneta to further increase their lead.

Jerry Matana’s try narrowed the scores to 17-12 but German Schulz put the game well beyond Fiji’s reach with a well executed try.

Halfback Pilipo Bukayaro scored a beautiful try in the last minute of play after picking the ball out of a scrum and racing his way to the try-line, untouched.

The Fiji vs New Zealand quarterfinal will kick off at 3.06pm.
