Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad says there is a need for economic diversification.
Speaking at the Sugar Industry Stakeholders meeting, Prof Prasad said it is also vital to consult and hold discussions with sugarcane farmers and landowners and include them back into the organisational structure of the industry.
He said the abolishment of the Sugar Cane Growers Council was a bad decision.
“As a Government, we are focused on the overall economic recovery.”
“That recovery has to be sustained and supported by all the sectors of the economy.”
“Part of that recovery process is to look at the diversification of the economy in general,” he stated.
