Dr Diva takes up coaching role

Dr Diva Singh has created local football history by becoming the first general practitioner to be appointed the head coach of a district.

Dr Singh, 37, who runs a private practice in Tavua Town, has been appointed the new coach for Tavua Football Association.

The stylish attacker, who still plays competitive football, told FijiLive he feels honored to be given the chance to guide the district.

“I have played competitive football for over 20 years now and I feel it’s time now to contribute more as a coach and help in the development of new and upcoming talents.”

Having scored 11 goals in the past season, the Namosau native who also had stints in Rewa and Lautoka, said Tavua was his first district and he feels obliged towards helping the Gold Town boys improve and get better.

“I am looking to hang my boots and focus more on coaching but if I am needed then only I will play. My aim is to help the team get better and more competitive.”

“It will be a big challenge given the fact that we have lost 9 key players to other teams this year. But there is immense talent in Tavua and I am confident of building a good team.”

“Most of my players are from Tavua U19 team. There will be no room for drug users in my team and we will be raising a lot of awareness to keep football drug free in Tavua.”

“We are also working towards contracting our players so they can get paid for playing and this should also motivate them to do better.”

Singh has qualifications in grass-root, youth development coaching and Senior MA course, obtained under the mentorship of Yogendra Dutt.

He will be assisted by George Ravula.
