Firefighters contain Defence Club fire

The Defence Club, located on the corner of Gordon and Hercules Street in Suva was destroyed in an early morning fire today.

Firefighters have managed to contain the fire at about 10am.

About 12 officers were deployed immediately to the scene after receiving a call.

Police confirmed that the fire began shortly after 8am, and the double storey clubhouse was engulfed in flames within minutes.

Three employees who were cleaning the clubhouse stated that the power had gone off, resulting in a power surge which caused fire on the first floor of the building.

Officers from both the National Fire Authority and Police are still at the scene.
