Six women have been elected into Parliament for the next four years.
Four Members of Parliament have served before while two will be entering the august house for the first time.
People’s Alliance Deputy Leader Lynda Tabuya, National Federation Party Vice President Lenora Qereqeretabua and former ministers Rosy Akbar and Premila Kumar are the returning MPs while NFP’s Sashi Kiran and People’s Alliance representative Alitia Bainivalu are the new entrants.
Of the 343 candidates contesting the 2022 General Election, 56 were women.
This is the same number of women who contested the 2018 General Election.
Due to the rise in candidate numbers in 2022, women made up 16.3 per cent, when compared with 17.7 per cent in 2014 and 24.0 per cent in 2018.
Women MPs make up 10.9 per cent of the Parliament setting which now has 55 seats.
This is lower than the 21.6 per cent in 2020 where there were 11 women representatives in the 51-seat Parliament.
