The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has welcomed Government’s recently announced $200 per child Back-to-School Support initiative.
FCCC chief executive Joel Abraham said with Fiji being a price taker, and thus subject to the whims of global price movement, this leaves families susceptible to the increasing cost of living.
He said this direct assistance will not only help thousands of families but will also create a multiplier effect contributing to economic growth.
“With the commencement of a new academic year, this is a very innovative approach targeted at the welfare of our school children, the future generation of Fiji,” he added.
Alongside this initiative, FCCC will be continuing their enforcement activities, such as pre-back-to-school inspections, surveys and awareness to ensure traders are in compliance and consumers are not mislead.
FCCC urges all consumers to continue exercising their rights and responsibilities while shopping for school supplies and report any unethical and unfair trade practices they may encounter and also reminds all business to refrain from acting unscrupulously during this back-to-school shopping season and also ensure that consumers are treated fairly at all times.
