18-year-old Fiji Kulas centre back, Angeline Rekha has had a year to remember.
After a commanding performance in the OFC U-19 Championships earlier this year, she was selected for a trial with New Zealand’s Wellington Phoenix.
“2023 was a great year. I received multiple awards and had the chance to trial with Wellington Phoenix.” the youngster told FijiLive whilst reflecting on her experiences.
Rekha’s family and friends have been a constant source of encouragement, supporting her at every step.
Their presence has been invaluable as she navigates the challenges and opportunities of international football.
The trial experience has provided Rekha with a taste of football at a higher level.
“The exposure there was more, the team dynamics were different, the weather was different,” she said, comparing it to the facilities and opportunities back home.
Post-trial, the feedback from Wellington Phoenix has been positive, with discussions of a potential second trial and recommendations to seek international play.
“They advised me to play for overseas clubs for better exposure,” Rekha shared, while she continues to wait for the confirmation of a follow-up trial.
After representing Fiji at the senior level and participating in the South Pacific Games, Rekha is determined to leverage her trial experience and is looking forward to the possibility of playing abroad, with a keen eye on the future and the advancements it holds for her career.
