Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced the development of a new Keiyasi Town, one of the four designated growth centres in Fiji.
Officiating at the groundbreaking ceremony for the development project, the Prime Minister said Nabouwalu, Seaqaqa and Korovou Tailevu have also been identified as growing centres that are being properly planned and developed before they are established as towns.
Rabuka said this is very important, for such towns will diversify the trade and business networks, resulting in economic growth that contributes to the rise in the country’s Gross Domestic Product.
He said it is quite remarkable that the launch of development works for the new Keiyasi Town is taking place on the same week that the Government is beginning a nationwide consultation for the formulation of a new national development plan for Fiji.
“Such a development plan is very important as it fosters lasting national unity and shared vision, in addition to the social, economic and political advancement of our nation.”
“This plan should facilitate practical solutions to the social and economic sectors, and it will guide the work of the Government in unlocking the huge potentials that remote regions like Keiyasi and political advancement of this country.”
The cost of phase one is estimated at $11 million and the project which is funded by the Government is expected to be completed in 18 months before phase two begins.
