Six names nominated to lead GCC

Six names have been put up to the Office of the President for endorsement to lead the Great Council of Chiefs.

They are the Turaga Bale Na Vunivalu Na Tui Kaba Ratu Epenisa Cakobau, the Marama Bale Na Roko Tui Dreketi Ro Teimumu Kepa, the Turaga Bale Na Tui Cakau Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, Ratu Meli Saukuru, Adi Finau Tabakaucoro and Ratu Viliame Seruvakula.

This has been confirmed by the Attorney-General Siromi Turaga, and is publicized in a gazette released yesterday.

Turaga said pursuant to regulation 3 and 10 of the i-Taukei Affairs (Great Council of Chiefs) Regulations 2024, the members appointed to the GCC to meet on 28 and 29 February 2024.

51 members of the Great Council of Chiefs have gone into the first session of their meeting.

It is expected that one of the six names will be endorsed and appointed for a three-year term to lead and Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of the GCC.

President, the Taukei Bolatagane Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has been ordered by the doctors to rest for the next two-days.

This was revealed by the Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka at the opening of the meeting in Pacific Harbour today.

“He had been advised by his personal physician to rest for another two days,” Rabuka said.
