The Water Sector Strategy 2050 outlines Fiji’s long-term vision and provides strategic direction for ensuring sustainable and resilient water and sanitation services for all citizens over the next three decades.
Highlighting this while launching the strategy at the British High Commission residence, Minister for Infrastructure, Public Works and Transport and Meteorological Services, Ro Filipe Tuisawau said water security is a cross-cutting issue affecting everyone, however, the Coalition Government is committed to its effort to increase access to water, and sanitation and improve infrastructure around the country.
Tuisawau said in this strategy, Fiji’s water sector priority projects and programs are outlined for the next three decades.
“They aim to improve the delivery of services, address climate vulnerability to services, replace our ageing water and wastewater infrastructure, contribute to the economy, and improve the environment.”
Asian Development Bank Director SouthEast, Asia and Pacific Water, Neeta Pokhrel highlighted water is one of the world’s most critical natural resources and one increasingly threatened by the impacts of climate change in Asia and the Pacific.
She commended the various stakeholders that have been part of this formulation of the water sector strategy 2050 and is urging them to work together to implement these strategies and also outlined that to be able to deliver the strategic pillars, water and sanitation will need to be climate-resilient, well maintained and renewed when they reach the end of their useful life.
