Student to front court over MPaisa scam

A 21-year-old student of Siberia, Labasa will front court today for Obtaining a Financial Advantage.

According to Police, on 9 November 2023, the suspect transferred $500 from the victim’s MPaisa account at about 7pm and the unlawful transferred amount was later withdrawn on the same day by the suspect from a supermarket in Labasa.

In a separate case, a 35-year-old labourer of Soasoa, Labasa was arrested and charged for Obtaining a Financial Advantage.

It is alleged that between 20th to 21st March last year, the suspect dishonestly obtained cash amounting to $587.00 from a member of the public through MPaisa platform.

Police Investigation revealed that the victim received a viber message with a profile picture of the Director of a company based in Labasa asking for $230.00 and the money will be paid back the next morning during business hours.

The victim thought that it was a genuine message, hence remitted the said cash via MPaisa.

Later, she received another message asking for more due to an urgent matter, whereby, she sent another $357.00 through internet banking.

She later realised that it was a scam and reported the matter to Police.

The suspect will be appearing in the Labasa Magistrates Court today.
