System designed to capture farmer info: Singh

The Ministry of Sugar has launched a state-of-the-art system designed to digitally capture and utilize crucial farmer information, empowering stakeholders to better serve and support cane farmers and their families.

During the launch at the Sugar Cane Growers Council Hall in Lautoka, Minister Responsible Charan Jeath Singh said the Coalition Government is committed to leveraging technological advancements for the benefit of sugar cane farmers and the long-term sustainability of the sugar industry.

Singh said the Growers Management System, an initiative funded by the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) program, represents a significant milestone in the industry’s journey toward operational excellence.

While acknowledging the United Nations’ commitment towards Fiji’s sugar industry, Singh said growers management is the first standalone database for Sugar Cane Farmers, reiterating the importance of digitalizing the industry for better management of raw data.

The Sugar Minister also announced a strategic collaboration between the Sugar Cane Growers Council and Anchor Care Migration & Consultancy Ltd to address labour shortages in the industry.

He said through this partnership, foreign workers from Bangladesh will be engaged to support agricultural activities, particularly during peak harvesting seasons.

He also stressed that the initiative aims not only to alleviate labour shortages but also to promote cultural exchange and mutual learning between communities.

Singh extended his appreciation to the SCGC and all stakeholders involved in bringing these innovative solutions to fruition, emphasizing the collective effort towards building a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable sugar industry for generations to come.
