GCC members to have no political affiliation

Members of the Great Council of Chiefs who are associated to any political party in Fiji will have to relinquish their position.

Attorney-General Siromi Turaga told FijiLive that this decision will keep the GCC transparent and it will not be seen as another politicised body.

Turaga said under the i-Taukei Affairs (Great Council of Chiefs) Regulation 2024, anyone who is affiliated with a political party or holds position must resign to become a member.

He highlighted that there is a thin line that runs, because everyone is still seen as political because Fijians talk about politics all the time.

“We must try to move to a doable system that is sustainable, qualified and experienced discussions that confronts the indigenous Fijians – Something that is not seen as too political,” Turaga said.

The Attorney-General said there is a policy paper that would highlight this matter to members of the GCC.
