President opens new session of Parliament

His Excellency the President of Fiji, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere opened the 2024 session of Fiji’s Parliament today.

A 100-strong guard of honour of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces greeted the President on his arrival at the Parliamentary complex.

As Head of State and Commander in Chief, Ratu Wiliame took the salute before he inspected the guard of honour, accompanied by the Commander of the RFMF, Brigadier General Ro Jone Kalouniwai.

The President was then escorted into the Parliamentary chambers by the Speaker, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu and the Leader of Government, Ro Filipe Tuisawau.

In keeping with tradition, members of the judiciary led by acting Chief Justice, Justice Salesi Temo joined our 55-elected Members of Parliament inside the “new look” and r$4.4 million refurbished Parliamentary chambers.

Diplomats and leaders in public and the private sector filled up the public gallery.

In his address, the President urged Parliamentarians to “listen to the voices of our people” and to “embrace with resolve the principles of democracy and humanity as enshrined in our constitution.”

“We must acknowledge and recognize our differences, however, we must be united with one common goal to ensure that we live in a progressive and prosperous nation.”

Ratu Wiliame also outlined the work programme of the Coalition Government for 2024, specifying some of the key policies and initiatives of the Government.

Following His Excellency’s gracious speech, Parliament was adjourned to next Monday  when debates on his address will begin.
