For the first time ever, the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) has established an independent committee to advise it on the appropriate remuneration and allowances that should be payable to all the constitutional offices under its responsibility.
Prime Minister and chair of the Commission, Sitiveni Rabuka while delivering his ministerial statement in Parliament today said the independent committee consists of Cama Raimuria (as chairperson), Salote Uluinaceva and Elenoa Biukoto.
He said the remuneration and allowances for future appointments, including for Supervisor of Elections, Commissioner Corrections and Auditor-General, will be based on the recommendation of the Independent Committee as mandated by section 136(2) of the Constitution.
“Unfortunately, the previous COC did not adhere to this constitutional requirement and
some of the previous office holders’ remuneration and or allowances are the subject
of certain investigations by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption
(FICAC),” said the Prime Minister.
