London-based Fiji Under 19 defender Peter Ravai is calling on the national Under 17 team players to wear the Fiji jersey with pride at the OFC Under 17 Championship this week.
Speaking to FijiLive from London, Ravai said he is confident of the young team selected and trained by experienced coach Sunil Kumar.
Ravai, who was part of the Bula Boys at the World Cup Qualifiers in Qatar in April, helped Fiji qualify for the FIFA Under 20 World Cup in Indonesia this year.
“Fiji has a lot of raw talents and I have a lot of faith in Sunil. We experienced his coaching while we were in camp. He is very talented, has a lot of football knowledge, and is straightforward in training,” Ravai said.
“I feel that teams should not underestimate Fiji Under 17 because I have seen these players train. Some of them came to watch our training in the Under 19 camp. They are young players but they can do wonders. They can be threatening and dangerous because of the guidance from the coach.”
“The White jersey has a lot of pride so fight for your country. When you wear that white jersey it’s not only about having a spot in the team but making sure that you take up responsibility and play your role in the team.”
“This is the time to show the other teams the reason why you have worn the white jersey. If you have worked hard to earn the national jersey, put that hard work at OFC and help your team qualify for the World Cup.”
Ravai, while giving his best wishes to the team, also urged the fans to show their support towards the team.
“My advice to the players is to be humble, don’t overdo things because when you overdo things, that’s when unexpected things happen. Be calm and play a smooth and smart football.”
“Discipline will play a huge role so always listen to the coach. Always stick to your game plan. Have confidence in yourself because if you have that, then you’ll give your 100 per cent.”
“Get the basics right in the game. Teams can come back and always prepare for the unexpected till the last minute of play.”
“Nothing is impossible with God, and the support from parents and fans.”
“My request to the fans is to please go and support these boys. They need you during this time as Fiji is the host nation,” he added.
Fiji opens its OFC campaign against Samoa at 7pm at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva on Thursday.
