Mother on assault charge remanded

The 43-year-old woman who allegedly assaulted her daughter has been remanded in custody.

The matter was called in the Magistrates Court in Nasinu today before Magistrate Sufia Hamza, where she also transferred the matter to the High Court.

The accused, Maria Waqasaqa, is charged with one count of act with intent to cause bodily harm.

It is alleged that on Tuesday in Nasinu, Waqasaqa hit her 16-year-old daughter with a mop stick several times on her left shoulder and also threw an empty beer bottle on her head.

Magistrate Hamza has also issued an interim restraining order and says the complainant is protected.

The Police prosecution objected to bail as it is an indictable offence, while Waqasaqa waived her right to counsel.

The matter has been adjourned to 16 February for first call in High Court.
