The Health Ministry has recorded three COVID-19 deaths in the last seven days.
The first deceased is an 85-year-old female from Labasa.
She presented to the Labasa Hospital on Wednesday (14/12/22) unresponsive and in respiratory distress; and tested positive for COVID-19. Sadly, she died a few hours later on 14/12/22. She had significant pre-existing medical conditions that also contributed to her death.
She received her first dose of COVID-19 vaccine in July and second dose in September. She was vaccinated with 2 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
The second COVID-19 fatality is a 63-year-old male from Labasa. He presented to Labasa Hospital on Saturday (17/12/22) and sadly died two days later on 19/12/22 due to Severe COVID-19.
He had significant pre-existing medical conditions that also contributed to his death. He was vaccinated with 3 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
The third deceased is a 77-year-old male from Suva. He had presented to CWMH on 15/12/22 in respiratory distress and tested positive for COVID-19.
Sadly, he died one day after admission on 16/12/22. He had significant pre-existing medical conditions that also contributed to his death. He was vaccinated with 2 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
There have been a total of 881 deaths due to COVID-19 in Fiji.
As of December 18th, 2022, the national 7 days rolling average for COVID-19 deaths per day is now 0.0 (does not include the 3 new COVID-19 deaths as vaccination verification is underway), with a case fatality rate of 1.28 per cent.
Due to the time required by clinical teams to investigate, classify and report deaths, a 4-day interval is given to calculate the 7 days rolling average of deaths, based on the date of death, to help ensure the data collected is complete before the average is reported.
Fiji has also recorded 1002 COVID-19-positive patients who died from other serious medical conditions unrelated to COVID-19; their doctors have determined that COVID-19 did not contribute to their deaths, and therefore these are not classified as COVID-19 deaths.
