Culvert crossing proves fatal in Nadi

Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Lynda Tabuya has sent her condolences to the family of Aahil Hussein who lost their six-year-old son.

Raihan Raizal Ali tragically died after trying to cross a flooded culvert with his 60-year-old grandmother.

The incident happened in Togomasi in Nadi last week.

Tabuya is pleading with guardians to be aware of their children’s whereabouts all the time.

“To my fellow Fijians, especially to our parents, guardians and all those who have children under their custody and care, the safety and care of our children is paramount especially as we are in the cyclone season and torrential rain and flooding is expected.”

She has urged parents not to leave their children unattended, particularly now that most parents are back at work.

“We must be particularly vigilant in ensuring that our children are not swimming or playing in flood prone areas. We must work in solidarity in creating a safe and enabling environment for our children so that we avoid such tragedies and our children live to their full potential,” Tabuya added.
