A 2-year-old girl of Vunikoka, Seaqaqa has become Fiji’s first fire fatality of this year.
The deceased and her 3-year-old sibling were alone in their home when a fire broke out just after 1pm on Monday.
Firefighters from the Seaqaqa Fire Station responded immediately after getting a call.
Upon arrival at 1.22pm, they found a three-bedroom timber and corrugated iron house fully engulfed in flames.
The crew established 1 delivery of 2 lengths from tank supply to extinguish the fire.
At 1.52pm, a Fiji Pine truck with two 5000-litre water tanks arrived to provide support with a delivery of one length.
Upon further investigation, it was found that a two-year-old, who was last seen inside the house, was missing.
The firefighters later located the charred remains of the two-year-old inside the house.
The NFA investigation team with Police forensic team retrieved the body from the scene.
Police are also conducting investigations into the incident.
Information gathered confirmed that at the time of the incident only two children were inside the house
The three-year old escaped to the neighbour’s house, while the two-year-old was trapped inside the burning house.
Their parents had gone to the hospital, leaving the children alone in the house.
The house sustained 90 per cent damage.
