Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, SMEs and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica attended a trilateral meeting with Australia’s Assistant Minister for Trade, Tim Ayres and New Zealand’s Trade Minister Todd McClay, on the margins of the informal gathering of World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministers, organised by Australia.
During the meeting, Kamikamica discussed pivotal issues concerning the sustainability of global fisheries, particularly focusing on addressing overcapacity and overfishing.
Reflecting on their collaborative efforts during 13th WTO Ministerial Conference, he recalled the productive engagements they had while representing the Pacific region and advocating for stronger disciplines on subsidies contributing to overcapacity and overfishing.
The Deputy Prime Minister conveyed optimism about the groundwork already laid during MC13 for shaping an agreement that addresses the urgency and severity of the matter.
He expressed gratitude for the strong support received from Australia and New Zealand and emphasised the critical importance of standing together to protect the interests and future of the Pacific region.
Looking forward, Kamikamica outlined plans aimed at focusing on practical solutions, underscoring the importance of continued cooperation.
