No flood-related injuries or fatalities

There have been no flood-related injuries or fatalities in the last 48 hours.

This was confirmed by the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) Director, Vasiti Soko in a media conference this afternoon.

Soko highlighted that the Emergency Committee met for the second time today and has discussed and agreed on the following:

  • Restoration of critical services
  • Deployment of teams to assess damage and provide a report
  • Maintain and look after those currently in evacuation centres, while at the same time seeing to farmers affected by the flood
  • Disinfect all schools used as evacuation centres during the last 48 hours
  • A rigorous media campaign looking at LTTD symptoms.

The Fiji Meteorological Services together with Fiji NDMO have highlighted that a heavy rain warning remains in force for the whole Fiji Group, till Friday.

Soko said due to the heavily saturated soil there is a risk of flash flooding and NDMO’s emergency teams are assessing high-risk areas.

She said that the heavy rain last night revealed issues of Fiji’s inadequate drainage systems around the country and has called on Fijians to clean drains and culvert systems adjacent to homes so that dirt does not flow onto main lines causing a blocked system which in turn causes flooding.
