Fiji’s Consumer Council says a recent price survey of text and exercise books has revealed price increases of up to 136 per cent compared to last year.

Council chief executive Premila Kumar said the price hike follows the introduction of the new duty of 25% on selected educational items, including textbooks and exercise books.

“Out of a total of 35 textbooks surveyed, 30 (86%) had increased in price compared to January 2011, while for 5 books, the prices dropped. The highest average price increase recorded was for Class 7,” Kumar said.

Price differences can be as high as $5 for an item so the Council urged parents to compare prices before buying.
