Observers play an important role in supporting a transparent and credible election.
Multinational Observers Group (MOG) representative Rebekha Sharkie made this comment at the Suva Grammar School Polling venue this morning.
The Australian Parliamentarian said observers have been on the ground in Fiji observing every step of this election since the issuance of the writ on the 31st of October this year.
“We are the multinational observer group and we are here on invitation from the Fiji Government to support the Fiji people to cast their vote.”
“Also been collecting information from a wide range of stakeholders including from Government, civil society, religious organisations and media and political parties.”
“Today, our observers will be present at hundreds of polling stations and we will also be observing the counting and tallying of votes. It’s a privilege to be at the launching of the poll and we appreciate the welcome we have received from the people of Fiji to contribute to this important crisis.”
“The observer group deployed over 90 observers to witness Election Day activities at several 100 of the 1436 polling stations in all four of Fiji’s geographical divisions. Observers will also observe ballot counting and tallying at the National count Center and the National results center tonight, and we will be observing around the clock until the final results are announced, likely sometime on the weekend.”
“It’s a beautiful day here in Fiji and we encourage all registered voters to get out and vote.”
The multi-observer group is made up of over 90 accredited observers from 16 countries and two international organisations whose role is to observe this 2022 Fijian Election.
The Government of Fiji has invited Australia, India and Indonesia to co-lead the group for the selection and this is the same arrangement that work was held in 2014 and 2018.
