Move to high ground now: NDMO

The National Disaster Management Office is urging residents living in low-lying and flood-prone areas adjacent and downstream of Wainibuka and Wainimala Rivers, to exercise extreme caution, as a flood warning is now in effect for these areas.

According to the Fiji Meteorological Service, the water level at Nayavu Station along the Wainibuka River currently stands at 7.26 meters, which is 0.76 meters above the alert level and is continuing to rise.

The NDMO is advising the public to ensure they have essential supplies such as non-perishable food, water, medication, and first-aid kits readily available in case of an evacuation or emergencies.

NDMO says to stay indoors and avoid any unnecessary travel, especially in flood-prone areas.

“Keep an eye on nearby water levels, rivers, and streams. Be prepared to evacuate to higher ground if the need arises. If the need to move arises, move while it is daylight.”

“Continue to adhere to advisories issued by the relevant authorities. Stay updated with local news channels and official weather updates from the NDMO, the Nadi Weather Office, and the Fiji Government platforms for the latest information and advisories.”

The NDMO is pleading with the public to take the warnings seriously.
