Ex Govt MP Prakash found guilty

Former Government MP Vijendra Prakash was today found guilty of giving false information to a public servant and obtaining $33,670 in Parliamentary privilege.

The case was called for judgment today before High Court judge Justice Dr Thushara Kumarage.

While delivering his ruling, Justice Kumarage said Prakash knew or believed the information he provided to Parliament that he lived at Waidracia, Naluwai, Vunidawa, Naitasiri was false and by providing that information this would result in the former acting Secretary General to Parliament, Viniana Namosimalua pay him $33, 670 in allowances he was not entitled to.

This happened between August 2019 and March 2020.

Justice Kumarage said while Prakash claimed to live at Waidracia, there was not an iota of evidence to support this and information registered with other Government agencies showed that his residential address was at Lot 1, Omkar Road in Narere.

Prakash therefore was found guilty and convicted accordingly of one count of giving false information to a public servant and obtaining a financial advantage.

The case will be recalled for sentencing and mitigation submissions on 26 January, 2023 and Prakash has been ordered to surrender his travel documents.

He has 30 days to appeal.
