A number of former Fiji 7s reps including two members of the Olympic gold medal winning teams have launched a social media campaign, calling on Osea Kolinisau to be appointed the head coach of the national team.
As the national team bombed out of the Los Angeles 7s on Sunday after losing 21-19 to Spain, the Stonewriters Facebook group posted a video with former players calling for change, and all throwing their support behind Kolinisau, the captain of Fiji’s 2016 Olympic gold medal winning team.
Orchestrating the move are Kolinisau’s former mates Vatemo Ravouvou, Pio Tuwai and Isake Katonibau.
Other players in the video include 2021 Olympic winner Asaeli Tuivuaka, Livai Ikanikoda, Josua Vici, Joeli Lutumailagi, Setareki Bituniyata, Alasio Naduva, Ulaiyasi Lawavou, Waqabaca Kotobalavu and Paula Dranisinukula.
The Stonewriters in their post stated that they are deeply saddened and hurt with where Fiji 7s is at the moment, and they find themselves compelled to do what is necessary to preserve the country’s national legacy.
The Fiji 7s team under current coach Ben Gollings has not won a tournament on the World Sevens Series, and following the Los Angeles 7s, the drought has extended to 19 tournaments.
